Rise of Skywalker Final Trailer Deep Dive

Rise of Skywalker Final Trailer Deep Dive

So, the final trailer dropped and being the die-hard Star Wars fan that I am, I’m obsessed with it. Now I’m going to pick it apart and see what I can learn from some of my favourite moments. If you’re interested in watching it yourself or you’re not one of the 20 million who already have, here you go:

I’m not going to tackle the scenes in chronological order the way they are in the trailer. Instead, I’m going to try and piece together scenes and try and connect some of the dots that way. I’m not going to be making any outright theories – that’ll be in a different post. This is just speculation based on what we’ve seen in the trailers thus far.

NOTE: As this is the end of the Skywalker Saga – literally nine movies – there might be spoilers for the previous eight.

The trailer starts off with what I’m assuming is a continuation of Rey’s training montage, so I have nothing really to add to that. What did catch my interest was how much they revealed on that crazy ocean planet. We know from previous trailers that this is where the remains of the Death Star are located. Could it be Endor?

This is a screengrab from the end of the very first trailer we got for episode nine. In it, we watch as Rey and the whole gang – Poe, Finn, C3PO, Chewie and BB8 – arrive at the coast and what is very obviously the ruins of the Death Star.

They arrive at this place together, and though it is extremely hard to tell, it’s definitely Rey on that sailer. At some point she must separate from the rest of the group because later on in the trailer we get this:

And then this:

It’s definitely the same place. If the waves weren’t a huge giveaway, visible among the waves are ruins of a ship. Possibly the Death Star or a star destroyer. An interesting parallel to The Force Awakens where Jakku is essentially a ship graveyard from a previous battle. Then the two of them battle, though it’s definitely not a final battle. We know Kylo later fixes his helmet because he is seen wearing it in later scenes.

If you saw the shot from the earlier trailers, we know that Rey arrives in this area with the gang and this looks to be a pretty desperate Finn calling Rey’s name. Those ruins look to be falling into the ocean, and it makes me wonder if maybe something caused a disturbance in the water? Maybe there is something that they must recover from these ruined ships – something that both the resistance and the First Order are after.

This was also a very interesting scene because it’s the throne room of the Death Star which we know was in those watery ruins that Rey and Kylo were just fighting on. I’m thinking this is where the scene starts since everything still looks relatively calm. I think it’s interesting that only Rey has her lightsaber drawn here as well. We know from The Last Jedi that Kylo has complicated feelings towards his family, but I’m curious to know what his opinion is towards Rey following the end of that movie. He certainly looks more relaxed here than she does. Maybe he got here first?

No idea what this could be, though I’ve heard some theories that it’s a Sith Temple. I don’t recognize the symbol anywhere, but this scene and the next actually strike me as more of a force vision than any actual event.

The infamous shot of what any Star Wars fan might assume to be Emperor Palpatine. Something about this makes me think it’s actually a force vision, mostly because of the area – it’s vast and empty. No one else is there. It almost looks like decrepit stone tiles that you might find in, oh I don’t know, a Sith temple? And the fog around it just gives it a more immaterial and dream-like quality.

I have no idea what this is but it looks so cool. I thought at first it was a reflection on the water, but if you look closely, they don’t match up. The top and bottom are different. I’m not sure if it’s just a giant iceberg floating in space or what the situation is, but I know that we see a shot of a star destroyer erupting out of something – could it possibly be ice?

Love the running and gunning, and Poe and Finn have such good chemistry, so I’m glad they’re going to be together for a lot of this movie. Hopefully, they’ll have a lot of great scenes together that we just didn’t get as many of in episodes seven or eight. This looks like a First Order ship to me, but I think it’s interesting that there is no 3PO despite the fact that he has been travelling with them in many of the other scenes.

Speaking of, 3PO has me a little confused. He takes such a prominent role in this movie, and we’ve seen him now in several scenes and several different locations. He is clearly travelling with our main crew, but for what purpose? It likely has something to do with the red eyes we’ve seen him in previous trailers. I’m thinking he’s going to have a big part to play in the ninth movie, I just can’t figure out what.

Ah, yes. This is one part of the trailer I’ve watched about fifty times in slow motion. It’s definitely meant to confuse you – are they fighting each other and that turret or statue is collateral damage, or are they fighting together to destroy it?

I’m about 99% certain it’s the latter, and I’ve got two reasons why. The first, which you can tell from this shot is the angles of the lightsabers. Unless they edited something to trick us, it looks off. And that’s because they’re not trying to hit each other. And second, if you do what I did and watch it frame by frame, you’ll also notice that the two characters are not looking at each other. Instead, they’re looking at the weird turret-statue-thing. Normally in a fight, especially with two people who are as adept at fighting as these two, you’d be looking at your opponent, right? But they aren’t looking at each other at all. They’re looking at our mystery object.

It’s also very imperial looking, don’t you think?

That’s that! I’m sure if I sat and watched the trailer 20 more times I’d be able to pick out more things, but I want to toe the line – I don’t want to spoil anything for myself. I keep clear of leaks and focus only on the information they are giving us. At the same time, I’m also too excited so I have to indulge my little fangirl heart somehow, y’know?

I hope this was coherent. I actually had another post planned this week, but my mind has been on Star Wars since the trailer dropped on Monday.

Now that I’ve got that off my chest, I’m going to go buy my tickets!

What Did You Think of the Trailer?

If you can’t tell from this post, I absolutely love videos and essays and the like about speculation, especially where Star Wars is concerned. There is so much potential material, and the trailers they give us are very carefully edited. Did you notice anything in the trailer? Did the trailer get you excited? Did you think it could have been better? Let me know in the comments!
