Pokemon Sword/Shield: Favourite Galar Pokemon

Pokemon Sword/Shield: Favourite Galar Pokemon

A few weeks back I (painfully) narrowed down my top 5 Pokemon of every generation, so it’s only fair that I do the same for the new set. With all the controversy over the Pokedex changes, it’s not as big a roster of new Pokemon as we’re used to, but there are still some amazing options to add to your team.

So, even though it was brutally hard to narrow it down to just 5 the first time, I’ve done it again for the new Galar Pokemon. Suffering for content.

Anyway, here we go:

My Top Five NEW Galar Pokemon

1. Corviknight

I’ve been in love with this Pokemon since we first saw it in the trailers. It looks absolutely amazing, definitely one of the best looking of the early level bird Pokemon, and when I finally got my hands on one, it was just as awesome as I hoped it would be. Insanely tanky and an amazing type combination. I happened to get a rookidee in a raid really early with the amazing Mirror Armor ability, and I carried it through my entire playthrough of Pokemon Shield. Definitely an all-time favourite Pokemon.

2. Falinks

When I saw a picture of this guy online, I was not impressed. I assumed it was a bug type, and it looked like a store-brand wiggler.

But then I saw it in-game, and I was instantly obsessed with this Pokemon. ‘Cause it’s not a worm with little spikes for eyes. No, it’s actually 6 little guys in formation, moving in perfect sync. It’s based on the phalanx formation of ancient Greece, where they would form a line of shields and spears.

Weird move set, amazing concept and great stats have me super excited to use this Pokemon in some online battles.

3. Polteageist

I love tea, and I love obscure Pokemon. Polteageist is a bit of both. The idea of a ghost that possesses antique teapots is such a cool idea, but on top of that it’s a really powerful special sweeper and it’s got some fun moves to play with. I’m itching to get my hands on a shiny version of it!

4. Eiscue

I don’t know why I love this Pokemon so much, but I do. It’s a pure ice type, and I think it’s the first ice Pokemon to make it into my favourites. The concept behind it is so cool – it keeps it’s little head in an ice cube to keep itself cold, and said ice cube absorbs the first physical hit it takes. And reveals the adorable melancholy penguin beneath. Also, the name is very clever.

5. Appletun

I love weird type combos for Pokemon, and I’ve found a lot of the recent dragon types to be..uninspired, I guess. Cool looking, but nothing really unusual (and unusual Pokemon are my favourites!). But Appletun is a grass/dragon which is itself a weird typing, and it looks very different from many of the other dragon types. It’s also a very tanky Pokemon, which has become a theme for me. Also, I love apple pie, and it’s such an adorable concept for a Pokemon. I didn’t expect to love it, but it’s continued to grow on me.

Honorary Mentions

I absolutely love Sirfetch’d’s design and I’m so glad one of the original generation Pokemon got an update. I think if I’d have played Sword instead of Shield and had a chance to use Sirfetch’d more, it would have made it into the top five instead of the top 8. I’ve got my hands on one now, and we’ll see if once I’ve had a chance to use it if this list shifts around a bit. Still an awesome design and concept, so I had to give it an honorary mention.

I know everyone loves Zacian, but I can’t be the only one who thinks Zamazenta is cooler. It looks so much fluffier, and I like it’s overall design a lot more compared to Zacian. It’s really cool how they implement the ‘shield’ aspect, as well. It even looks like it’s wearing a cape! Like Sirfetch’d, I haven’t had much chance to use it, and I’ve already built a team and played around with the other Pokemon. There’s still a chance for this one to move on the list, but it’s definitely one of my favourite legendaries in a long time!

Galarian Corsola & Cursola

I wasn’t sure if this was cheating or not, since Corsola is not technically a Galarian pokemon, but it’s evolution Cursola is. It’s actually a little sad when you think about what insired the dead coral Pokemon, but it’s also got some great stats. Cursola is a powerhouse with some cool abilities, though it’s sad face honestly makes me a little upset.

I both love and hate doing these, but I think there are a lot of really interesting Pokemon introduced to the series in Sword & Shield, and I’m really happy about that at least. I know there are a lot of criticisms about the game and story, but I think we can agree that there are some winners in this new Pokedex.

One thing I’ve noticed with this generation is that I have a strong affinity for the tankier, more defensive type of Pokemon than I do the super-powerful hard hitters. I’m excited to get my team trained up so I can jump into battles!
