No, that doesn’t mean I’ll be writing twelve stories over the next twelve months though that is definitely an interesting idea. I’ll save that for another time.
I’m on a mission this year, to knock off some of the books on my TBR that I’ve wanted to read for ages and have just never ‘found the time’ or had the courage to dive into.
I have a terrible habit of taking out books from the library and neglecting the stuff I actually own. So I figured I’d assign a book to each month, and divide it evenly between my science fiction and fantasy.
I have listed below six sci-fi and six fantasy books I plan to read in 2020. There is one for each month, and I’ll be jumping back and forth between the two lists in about the order I have listed here.
Science Fiction
- Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufmann (2015, 602 pages)
- Dune by Frank Herbert (1965, 688 pages)
- Fortune’s Pawn by Rachel Bach (2013, 320 pages)
- Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits by David Wong (2015, 384 pages)
- Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel (2014, 336 pages)
- The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi (2017, 336 pages)
Fantasy
- The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N. K. Jemisin (2010, 427 pages)
- A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab (2015, 400 pages)
- A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin (2005, 835 pages)
- Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (2015, 465 pages)
- The Diviners by Libba Bray (2012, 578 pages)
- Truthwitch by Susan Dennard (2016, 416 pages)
First up is Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufmann!
It goes without saying that I’m really excited for pretty much all of these. Sometimes I get worried they won’t live up to the hype or the premise, or they end up being a behemoth in size and I find that sort of time commitment really intimidating.
But not anymore! 2020 is where I conquer these fears, and that means reading the books I just really want to read.

What do you want to read in 2020?
