Because what else would you do with a life simulator?
In all honesty though, I’ve wanted to do this since I designed my dream office a few months ago. Like with the office, it’s fun to think about your ideal living space. Maybe a little motivating, too!
In case you didn’t know, The Sims 4 is the fourth instalment in a series of life simulation games where you control the lives of the comical and slightly inept Sims. And you control everything – how they spend their day, what they eat, where they work, who they fall in love with. You design their house, pick their clothes, and choose their personality and their aspirations in life.
Once upon a time, these games were just an opportunity to live out my dream life. I would design my ideal self, give her the house I always wanted, and the successful career I dreamed about. It has this addicting wish fulfillment aspect to it. But the older I get, the more I enjoy playing Sims as a way of creating characters and telling new stories. I don’t want to control everything so much as I want to gently nudge to see how things play out.
Still, who doesn’t like to indulge every now and again? I love designing houses, especially interiors, so I always have a lot of fun doing things like this. It’s also interesting to think about what you actually would want and use – what would you keep inside the house or apartment of your dreams?
Anyway, I’m guessing you clicked on this post to see my ‘dream apartment’, so I won’t keep you waiting any longer!

I’ve always wanted to live in an apartment. I like the coziness of small spaces, and owning a house sounds like a too much upkeep. What I’ve designed today is a one bedroom, one bathroom apartment. If you saw my dream office, you’ll probably recognize a lot of the same items, themes and colours – what can I say, I have my own style!

You might notice that my ‘office’ is not the same as the one I previously designed. I always saw my ideal work space as a studio – a place I go to for ‘work’, outside of my house. But I can be a workaholic so I wanted to include a dedicated ‘work space’ in my dream home as well!
You can see my mini-kitchen in the corner – the smaller the better, because then I’ll have less counter to clean, and less space to clutter with stuff!

Moving on to the bedroom, which was honestly the hardest part of this whole thing. As much as I love doing this sort of stuff in the Sims, the selection can be lacking at times. I just didn’t realize how lacking until I wanted a nice bed in pink and grey hues. I turned to custom content, and this was the closest thing I could find. But I still really like it!

Here we have the front door and the living space. Super small, and with a giant television to binge Netflix and play video games of course! I’m also obsessed with big windows – I love all of the natural light they let in.

I’m torn on whether or not I’d want a balcony of some kind. I love the idea of a little nook where I can step out to get some fresh air, read a book and drink some tea. But then I think of the upkeep and suddenly I’m not as excited about it.
But this is the Sims, and I don’t have to do any upkeep, so I get the balcony! It’s super small, and I’m no green thumb but I’d like to think I’d try growing some low-maintenance plants out there as well.

A washer and dryer inside of my apartment is obviously a must. Just to the left of it is a very small bathroom with a shower instead of a bath. I didn’t bother taking a picture of that. Not only was it hard to angle the camera properly in such a small space, it’s not particular interesting.

What do you think?
I’m really happy with how it turned out! Its nothing overly complicated, but it still cute and suits my aesthetic. Kinda wish I lived there now that I’ve spent all this time designing it just the way I want.
This took considerably longer to build and design than my office space did. I think because there are so many more rooms I need to design, and so much more thought and care has to be taken with what and where you place things. You think you have an idea of what your dream house will be like until you actually decide to sit down and build the thing.
It just so happens that I’m doing a redesign of my bedroom right now, which made this even more fun – playing with colours and styles I want to incorporate in my real life. And maybe get a little closer to that dream!
