Scrivener is the ultimate novel writing software and has been a staple of the NaNoWriMo survival kit for years, and now I’ve made it even easier to write your novel with a template to guide you through all 30 days of writing madness.
It includes a day-by-day plot outline based on the three-act structure, meaning you will have a fresh scene or chapter to write for each day of the event, so you don’t have to worry about getting stuck in the middle.
The template comes with 30 pre-made days which you can use as plot beats, scenes or full chapters, and it will guide you from the beginning of your story to the very end. The pieces are easily movable so don’t feel you have to stick to the order in the outline.
Each day also includes a scene checklist to help you flesh out your scenes, as well as pre-set project and daily targets so you don’t have to worry about getting your Scrivener file set up. All you have to do is sit down and write – a small progress bar in the corner of each day will increase as you work towards your 1,667 words!
It also includes everything you need to organize your novel, including character and setting templates, a place to keep track of writing sprints, and an idea vault for storing loose notes and ideas you come up with while drafting.

Note: This is a template for Scrivener 3. You will need to own the software to be able to install this template. Alternatively, Literature and Latte offers a free 30-day trial which you can use for NaNoWriMo.
How to Add the Template to Scrivener
- Unzip the contents of the zip file to a location of your choosing
- When you open a new project in Scrivener, navigate to the options button in the lower left-hand corner
- Click the button and look for the “Import Templates” option – click on this and it will open another window
- Find where you previously unzipped the contents, highlight the file NaNoWriMo.scrivtemplate and press open
- The NaNoWriMo template will be added to your existing templates, under a new category called “NaNoWriMo”, so you can use it as many times as you want!
Support NaNoWriMo!
NaNoWriMo is a really exciting event for writers, but is also, at its heart, a nonprofit organization that supports writing fluency and education, so if you’re a fellow Wrimo and you’re in a position where you’re able to donate, I highly encourage you to do so!
